CHAPTER TWENTY

THE VANITIES

It was the kind of kiss that if we were at a baseball game, the announcer would shout into a microphone, And the crowd went wild! Three’s lips were as I remembered—warm, soft, confident—and his breath smelled of cinnamon. When our tongues touched, I considered moving inside his mouth to live for the rest of my life.

I wished I’d pulled away, but I’m sorry to report it was Three and once we separated, I said, “Holy cow,” and he laughed.

“I remember you,” he said, and touched my nose with his thumb. Before I could throw myself at him again or wax poetic and add a gee whiz to that holy cow, he said, “I brought you a sandwich.”

“That’s exactly what a girl wants to hear after an epic kiss.” Organic desire was like drinking one too many fruity alcoholic beverages way too fast. Or, in Wisconsin language, chugging a beer bong in college, though at fifty years old, it was more of a hot toddy.

“You’re just the same.”

To my credit I did not point out my dry skin, gray hairs, or loss of confidence. No, instead I said, originally, “So are you. Should we kiss more or eat?”

“I was thinking, if it’s not too forward to ask you, Would you like to come and see where I live?”

“Yes. Yes I would,” I said, and like a bat did a quick echolocation of my body hair, underwear, and abdominal tone.

He gave me a slow smile that wrinkled into crow’s-feet and he took my hand. “Come on.” When his phone rang, I had moved on in my mind to my dry elbows and Kevin, wondering what to do about each one.

“Okay. Yes. Okay.” We made eye contact. The moment was gone; I saw it in his eyes. He clicked off his phone. “I’m sorry, Poppy. This is how it is producing. The ground is constantly shifting.”

“No more kissing?” I said, and disappointment fluttered along with a tinge of honest relief. I should have listened to that Kegel podcast, and Kevin would be glad to see me.

He shook his head, amused. “Not today.”

“Another day?”

He nodded and as he climbed into the golf cart and started the engine, he said, “Absolutely another day. Maybe next time we can visit that costume archive. Do you think you might be able to get the keys?”

“Maybe,” I said, not wanting to let him down. “I can look.”

“Oh, hey, there’s a new project being green-lit. Witherspoon and Kidman are attached. I can put in a good word with Wanda and Muriel if you like. If you still need money.”

“I’d love to be considered for another job.” Maybe Three and I could be a team, a success story finding happiness on movie sets, the seeds planted decades ago finally blooming.

“They’re highly competitive. It’s good to have an in,” he said and grasped my hand, giving me a smoky look.

My heart packed her extra beats away, my nervous system patted itself down, and my upper lip considered stiffening as I watched him motor off.
